WHAT CAN I DO?

REGIONAL ICON
LOCATED NEAR THE HEART of downtown Flagstaff, Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel is a prominent historic building and unique regional icon. Over the years, the exterior decorative concrete has severely decayed. Interior water damage and aging stained glass windows also require immediate and long-term repair.

RESTORATION URGENCY
IN SPITE OF ADVANCING DETERIORATION, the church appears solid to the casual observer, and the need for immediate intervention goes generally unnoticed. On closer examination, extensive decay is readily apparent.

THE SCOPE OF RESTORATION IS SIGNIFICANT. Assessment and restoration by firms with expertise in historic masonry, slate roofs, and stained glass windows is essential to preserve this treasure of architecture, workmanship, and design. With broad-based community support and your help, we can save this cherished Flagstaff landmark.

SOLUTIONS: WHAT'S NEXT
Two preliminary restoration phases have been completed.

  • Restoration Phase IApril 2015 – Initial Condition Survey
  • Restoration Phase IIAugust 2015 – Gargoyle molds were made and stained glass windows inspected
  • The next phase - Restoration Phase III - includes:
    • Investigative engineering to determine of the root cause of problems
    • Developing plans for restoration, preservation, and repair
    • Fixing stained glass panels in need of immediate repair
    • Increasing public awareness

WHAT CAN I DO?
The task is daunting, but not impossible. A project of this scale requires significant grassroots and community involvement.

Individuals can assist with publicity and fundraising by:

  • Spreading the word through casual conversation & formal presentations
  • Writing letters to the editor supporting the restoration effort
  • Encouraging local groups and businesses to sponsor the project
  • Encouraging individual donations

Such an effort mirrors the work of all those who gathered the stones to build the church 85 years ago … hauling them to the site “several at a time and by the wagon load.”
